Cold calling

How many calls a day.

The right answer depends on one thing: is this your full-time job, or one task among ten.

In short

For an owner or a salesperson with other duties, twenty to thirty calls in a two-hour slot is sustainable and productive. For a dedicated prospecting role, sixty to eighty calls a day is common. Beyond that, conversation quality degrades for almost everyone, and the meeting rate falls faster than the volume rises.

Why runs change everything

An isolated call is expensive: finding the record, recovering the context, working up the momentum. Twenty calls in a row cost far less than twenty times one call, because preparation is shared and the rhythm sets in.

It is also a quality question. Most people are better on their tenth call than their first, which never happens when you call once a day. Grouping means spending more time in the zone where you are good.

What twenty calls actually produce

Out of twenty numbers dialled, expect five to eight people actually reached, the rest being absences and voicemail. Of those conversations, one or two will show interest, and one will turn into a meeting on a good day.

These orders of magnitude are not a promise: they depend on the trade being called and the quality of targeting. They serve one purpose, calibrating your expectations so you do not conclude after two days that the method does not work.

When quantity becomes counterproductive

The signal is easy to spot: your useful conversation rate falls while the number of calls rises. That means you are calling faster than you are preparing, so you are burning contacts you will not be able to call again for a long time.

A contact called cold without preparation is not neutral, it is consumed. That is why a reasonable volume on a well-prepared list systematically beats a high volume on a raw one.

Frequently asked questions

Do voicemails count in the total?

Count them separately. The only figure that steers anything is the number of real conversations, since that is what produces meetings.

Two short slots or one long one?

One long slot is more effective thanks to the run effect, but two one-hour slots still beat scattering. The worst pattern is the isolated call between two other tasks.

How many attempts before dropping a contact?

Four to five spread over several weeks, at different times of day. Many contacts written off as unreachable were only unreachable at the hour you always called.
